Co-Design team

Today, information processing algorithms are ubiquitous in imaging systems. So, why not optimize these algorithms jointly with the optical system? This new approach is called "co-design." We implement it in three important areas: optical design, biomedical imaging, and polarimetric imaging.

Optical co-design

Photo-activated localization microscopy (PALM) is revolutionizing biological imaging. We design new optical components and associated processing algorithms to improve their performance. Image credits: Antony Lee, University of California, Berkeley

Polarimetric imaging

This imaging modality reveals contrasts invisible to the human eye. We design and manufacture agile polarimetric imagers that can adapt to the scene to optimize the contrast of objects of interest. These developments are based on fundamental research regarding the accuracy of these imagers and their fundamental limits.
